Evil twin attacks are a kind of cyberattack where the cybercriminal creates a fake Wi-Fi network to trick people into connecting so the attacker can steal the users’ data.
Examples of evil twin attack
An attacker creates a fake Wi-Fi hotspot in a public place such as an airport or cafe. Once that is done, they set up what is called a fake captive portal with which they collect and store the sensitive information from each victim that connects to the fake Wi-Fi.
How to stop an evil twin attack
- Do not log in to your accounts on any public Wi-Fi without adequate protection
- Always use a VPN
- Only visit HTTPS sites
- Do not ignore any prompts or warnings about an unsecured network
