Jackware

Jackware is a type of malware that can target IoT devices and computers. Instead of data theft or file encryption, jackware takes control of the device’s functionality.

Jackware: how it works

  • It quietly enters into a system through the device’s security weakness.
  • Once it gets in, jackware hijacks control from the device. The targets include smart devices and even self-driving cars.
  • The attacker will then ask for payment warning of potential harm to the device.

Why Jackware is dangerous

  • Physical harm: If a smart car is the target of jackware, the driver and occupants face the risk of injury or even death.
  • Compromised privacy: The hacker can spy on individuals on smart home devices like voice assistants and CCTV.
  • Disruption of critical services: Hijacking any critical machinery used in any industry can lead to service disruptions and even financial loss.

Preventing jackware

  • Keep software updated: A regularly updated system is primed to face and overcome any malware.
  • Use strong passwords: Always use complex, strong passwords for all your accounts and devices is a great way to keep jackware out.
  • Be cautious with unknown links: Be careful not to download attachments or click on links you got from unfamiliar or unverifiable sources.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: Setting up two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of protection.
  • Regularly backup data: Frequent backups won’t save you from jackware attacks, but it will ensure your files are safe.
  • Monitor device activity: Always look for any suspicious activity in your system. These are often indicative of security concerns.
  • Use security software: Install premium and trustworthy antimalware software to help scan, identify, and remove any malware in your system.
  • Limit device permissions: You must reduce the amount of users that have access to your system to streamline the possibility of it getting compromised.
  • Disconnect: Unless you own and use smart devices that need to be connected to the internet 24/7, do not stay online too long.
