The company also launched HangUp, a free standalone app that labels and blocks scam calls.

Product director Domininkas Virbickas said the tools act like a second pair of eyes for users.
Scam texts and nuisance calls flood phones every single day. NordVPN just gave iPhone owners two new tools to fight back.
NordVPN announced it is bringing message protection to iPhone for the first time. It also launched HangUp, a free app built only for screening calls. Together, the two tools close a gap that iPhone users faced for months.
Android users already had access to both features earlier this year. Their arrival on iOS now puts both platforms on equal footing. NordVPN has pushed hard into general digital safety over the past year, not just private browsing. This update marks its biggest step yet toward protecting an iPhone user’s everyday phone habits.
Message protection spots scam texts before you tap
Message protection checks every text from an unknown sender right away. It compares each message against phone reputation data and web link analysis. It also sorts each message into a category to flag anything that looks off.
When a suspicious text arrives, the app sends a push alert at once. That alert names the type of threat and tells users what to do next. Flagged texts open inside a safe view first. This stops a bad link from opening by accident.
A dashboard inside the app also tracks what gets caught. It shows how many scam texts the app has blocked so far. Users can glance at this dashboard anytime to check recent activity. NordVPN says it never stores the actual content of any screened call or text. That detail matters for anyone worried about privacy while using a scanning tool.
This feature sits right next to scam call protection on the same screen. Both tools now run from one single place inside the app. Users can turn message protection on during setup. They can also switch it on later from the app’s Product hub.
Once active, the feature keeps working even if the VPN itself stays switched off. That means protection continues running quietly in the background at all times.
HangUp screens calls and blocks scammers for free
HangUp stands apart from the main NordVPN app completely. It is a separate download, not just a bolted-on feature. It works without any NordVPN subscription at all. Users only need a free Nord account to set it up.
The app screens every incoming call the moment it rings. It then sorts each call into a clear category right away. These categories include scam, telemarketing, survey calls, debt collection, and fraud.
This lets a user see who is calling before they pick up. Scam and telemarketing calls can get blocked automatically. These calls simply never ring through to the user at all. That saves people from wasting time on unwanted interruptions. Setup only takes a few minutes, since no paid plan or credit card is needed.
A call log keeps a record of everything HangUp blocks. Users can also report suspicious numbers straight from the app. That reporting helps improve detection for every other HangUp user too. The app is available right now, and anyone can download it from the App Store.
NordVPN says the goal is a simple safety check
Domininkas Virbickas, product director at NordVPN, explained the thinking behind message protection. According to him, people receive a huge number of messages every single day. Delivery updates, bank alerts, login codes, and reminders all arrive constantly.
He noted that it gets hard to tell which messages are real once they all start looking the same. Virbickas added that the app simply works as an extra set of eyes, flagging messages that look suspicious before any harm is done.
Virbickas also explained why NordVPN chose to make HangUp completely free. According to him, nearly everyone receives scam calls sooner or later. He said that means everyone deserves an easy way to spot them coming. He added that putting a warning in front of more people is the fastest way to cut down the damage these calls cause. In his view, cost should never stand between a person and basic protection.
Scam texts and nuisance calls remain a steady complaint among mobile users in the UK. Features like these are slowly becoming a standard part of what VPN providers offer their customers. Message protection and HangUp now add to NordVPN’s growing list of extra tools.
The app already includes a built-in antivirus and a Dark Web Monitor. Both of those features run alongside the company’s core VPN service. Together, they show a provider moving beyond simple traffic encryption. Mobile users also face more targeted threats, including spyware campaigns that prompt Apple to issue security alerts, as detailed in Apple’s warning to users in 110 countries of targeted spyware attacks.
NordVPN appears focused on daily, everyday digital safety now. Scam calls and texts hit regular people the hardest, and this rollout targets exactly that problem. For now, iPhone users finally have the same safety net that Android users have used since earlier this year.
